Description: Students will learn how to navigate everyday literature, from newspapers, magazines and advertisements to chapter books, poetry and nonfiction books. They will learn to identify sources; they will discuss perspectives and genres and they will improve their oral and written communication skills. Based on students’ interests, students will be given the opportunity to create a book club, visit libraries and work with librarians.
Dual Enrollment Readiness
Time: 1x a week: Wednesday, 10.45am-12pm, 15 sessions
Ages: 12-18 / prerequisites: students must be at middle school level (6th grade minimum) and must be proficient readers.

Description: Students will learn the knowledge, the skills and receive the academic preparation needed to join the dual enrollment program (program allowing homeschoolers and students attending public, private or charter schools to simultaneously enroll in college courses). Students will receive academic support to prepare for the Accuplacer test (reading, writing and some support for arithmetic, algebra and quantitative reasoning). Students will do career exploration with self-assessment tools (values, interests, personality, aptitude); they will learn time management skills and they will work on learning strategies, test taking strategies and transition skills. Based on students’ interest, students will be given the opportunity to meet with college advisors and/or to visit college campuses.
Students enrolled in dual enrolment courses can join this course to receive support (academic, planning, wellbeing).
Journalism
Time: 2x a week: Monday and Friday, 11am-12pm
Ages: 11-15 / prerequisites: students must be able to write texts autonomously; students must be able to self-regulate while using technology; students must be able to interact/interview peers and adults independently.

Description: Students will discuss and report on current events, public issues, personalities, cultures and entertainment. They will learn the difference between media and news; they will discuss what makes a story newsworthy and they will discover the anatomy of a newspaper and a story. They will develop interviewing skills, writing skills and oral presentation skills. Finally, students will discover the role of photography and social media in journalism. Based on students’ interest, they will be given the opportunity to create a school newspaper.
English for Speakers of Other Languages
